Throughout his career, John has been responsible for managing businesses which, under his leadership, invested over $4 billion in real estate projects located throughout the United States. These investments have been in all types of properties and communities.
John is currently a Manager of W3 Partners, LC, a real estate company in which he owns one-third interest.
As a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Cottonwood Partners from 1996 to 2019, and CEO since 2005, John has been directly responsible for the acquisition and/or development of over 6,000,000 square feet of office, multi-family and medical space in Utah, Texas, California, Washington DC, Florida and Colorado. Cottonwood Partners has been an advisor to the Utah State Retirement Systems since 1995, and John has been the senior member of this advisory team since its inception. He was the driving force for the planning and development of the Cottonwood Corporate Center, a stunning 1,000,000 square foot office park at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, and The Forge, a 1,800,000 square foot mixed-use development in Vineyard, Utah, the center of Utah County (the heart of Silicon Slopes).
John enjoys his family and anything involving the game of golf and/or the mountains. He is a graduate of The Wharton School with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics.

• Senior Vice President, Director of Acquisitions and a member of the Executive Committee of the Balcor/American Express real estate investment company ($8 billion portfolio) in Chicago, Illinois
• President of the Balcor Shearson Lehman International Real Estate Company
• Vice-President and Stockholder of the Kidder Peabody & Company, a carriage trade investment banking company
• Vice-President and Executive Officer for Capital Markets at Systech Financial Corporation, a multi-family developer in the San Francisco Bay Area
Board Positions:
• Currently serves on the board of Huffman Health Holdings, LLC, owner of an alcohol and drug rehabilitation and treatment business
Past board positions have included:
• Children 1st, a pediatric Medicaid dental surgery business in Texas
• The Utah Natural History Museum
• Policy Advisory Board of The Fisher Center for Real Estate at the University of California at Berkeley
• Appointed by Utah Governor Leavitt and served as Board Member and Chair of the Finance Committee of The Central Utah Water Conservancy District, the largest water conservancy district in the Western U.S.
• Chairman of Governor Leavitt’s Silicon Slopes initiative for real estate development in Utah
